Our Vacation Home

Two years ago we resurrected our desire to go camping. Covid had found us spending most of our time at home, which was not a big problem since we have plenty of beautiful wooded land to enjoy on Salt Spring Island. However, we do like to explore other areas in BC, and we felt that camping was the safest way – plenty of fresh air, our own food and no concerns about mixing with large groups of people.

The rooms in our camping home

We sorted through the gear we still had from many years ago, replaced some items and added others that would make life more comfortable in our new camping home.

A tent that we could stand up in was essential for the “bedroom”. My knees dictated that. For the kitchen, we splurged on a camp stove that would cook rice on a low flame without burning it.

We also added a screen tent to provide protection from rain and/or sun. With the small table inside, it is an alternate dining area and a great place for writing blogs πŸ™‚ or for computer programming.

These items form the “rooms” at our camp site. Then we added other basics. The kitchen has a sink (the collapsible blue basin you see on the picnic table), and dishes, cutlery, pots, etc. all have their own storage containers making them easy to move in and out of the cupboard (the back of the car).

After two years of practice, it doesn’t take us long now to put everything in place when we arrive.

Our preferred destinations are campsites full of lush vegetation and close to bodies of water if possible. Rathtrevor Provincial Park is replete with towering trees and many sites are a few steps away from a beautiful beach that stretches far off into the distance. From our site this year, we can hear the water of the Strait of Georgia as it rolls up onto the shore.

I took the photo at the top of this post on my walk this morning. Can you see the line of geese that happened to fly by at that moment?

The tall cedar and fir trees of British Columbia create perfect places to step back from a busy life and regroup. This is one of the laneways I walk every day, flanked by tall cathedral spires. Our campsite is at the far end, and this is the view of our site as I draw near. A cozy and private space that we have filled with everything we need for a vacation.

Pausing in the morning sun

We enjoy peaceful mornings as the sun casts its first rays on our site.

View from our "dining" tent

And we enjoy this view of the luscious greenery from our “dining room” on restful afternoons after lunch. Speaking of lunch….

Today’s menu included mixed veggies with broccoli, sweet potatoes and cherry tomatoes, rice, sauteed panir and lassi. The fruit dessert featured stewed apples with fresh mango and blueberries. Rough life, isn’t it!

And in the evening we are often treated to beautiful sunsets over the water.

Thank you for visiting, and we hope you enjoyed this brief tour of our home away from home. Spending time in nature like this is nourishing and rejuvenating for us which is why we plan several camping trips each summer. We have another trip planned for next month.
